Archer River: Introduction

A Dutch navigator called it Dubbelde Ree in 1606; another Dutchman renamed it the Coen in 1623; an English geologist labelled it the Peach River in 1879. In 1865 the brothers Frank and Alexander Jardine, droving cattle north toward the tip of the continent, called it the Archer after a pastoral family back in Rockhampton - and that is the name on the maps today. But the Archer River does not need a European name to know itself. Rising in the rainforested McIlwraith Range, it runs west across the whole breadth of Cape York Peninsula, through savanna and wetland, until it spills into the Gulf of Carpentaria near Aurukun. This is one of the last truly wild rivers in Australia.
